![]() Breast Surgery
Breast can be augmented, reduced, lifted or reconstructed if absent. Asymmetry can be corrected.
Breast augmentation, or breast enlargement, is requested by women who don't have any breast tissue, by those who have small breasts or by women who just want more. The reasons they give are multiple, ranging from "improve body contour", "look more balanced", "restore the shape and volume they had before pregnancies" or "improve their sex life". In fact, what makes a woman a good candidate is her ability to understand that having a foreign body implanted in her breast, while not causing any harm to her general health, may cause problems on the breast itself (implant rupture, hardening of the breast, nipple sensation changes, malposition, etc.). Saline filled breast implant consist of a shell of different sizes that are filled at the time of the operation with the same basic solution that would be administered into your veins if you were hospitalized. Through a small incision, the implant is placed behind the breast tissue and the Pectoralis muscle .The operation is normally conducted under general anesthesia and last from one to one and a half-hour. Pain is mostly related to stretching of the muscle by a large implant and is well controlled by painkillers. Risks will be thoroughly discussed with you at the time of the consultation. They can always be dealt with. Fortunately, the great majority of women don't experience any complications and, moreover, those who do, don't want the implants to be removed, so much that they like their enhanced appearance and self confidence. Between one and two millions people in North America have had their breasts augmented.
Breasts can also be rejuvenated and their appearance improved by a breast lift, i.e. an operation where breast tissue and its skin brassiere is tightened. This is done through different incisions depending on the degree of sagging (ptosis). Mild ptosis only requires a periareolar incision (around the pigmented skin that surrounds the nipple): this is often called a donought mastopexy because of the shape of the removed skin. A moderate ptosis requires a vertical incision in addition to the periareolar incision to enable the surgeon to tighten the skin brassiere. A more severe ptosis might require an additional incision in the fold under the breast. Often, breast tissue is removed at the same time to reduce the volume and the weight of the pendulous breast.
